PRACTICALITIES

Fire wood
Chopped firewood for the stoves in Shepherds and Hay Loft is stacked under the car port in the back yard.  Please help yourselves.
Axes are left there for responsible adults & supervised young adults.

Heating
All units are centrally heated.  Stockmans has underfloor heating, Shepherds has radiators and the Hay Loft has a combination of the two.  Heating is thermostatically controlled.  Please adjust to your needs and use responsibly (e.g. not with windows open or when out). The hot water is always “on”.

Laundry
This is situated inside the courtyard, on the right-hand side.  There are 2 washing machines and an inside hanging rack for drying clothes as well as an outside line

Midges
Simple precautions make them bearable.  Don’t leave windows open and lights on at dawn or dusk or they will come in.  Keep moving when outside and button cuffs & collars.  They are most challenging at dawn, dusk and on still damp days in summer.  Sun and wind clear them.  Their season runs from May to August.

Parking
For Stockmans, please park next to the ramp, near the wall.  Shepherds and Hay    Loft folk should park in the yard at the back of the farm.

Pets/yours
They are welcome if you are responsible.  Droppings must be collected and damage compensated (scratched doors, etc).

Pets/ours
Our dogs will go for walks with you in the forest, but don’t feed them or let them in the cottages.  David can introduce you to the ponies, cows and chickens (which you can feed).

Power cuts
We are at the end of a ‘spur’ on the electricity supply and suffer a few cuts every year.  These rarely last for more than a few hours but, as water is electrically pumped from the nearest substation, an electricity cut also means no water.  A little tolerance is all it usually takes to get through it though.

Storage
Bikes and the like may be left in the cart shed beside the Laundry Room, accessed from inside the farm courtyard.

Waste
This goes in the wheelie bins except for cardboard and newspaper which go in the metal bin to be burned for heating.  Organic waste can go in the compost bin in the garden opposite Stockmans.  Cans, glass and plastic bottles can be recycled at the Locharmoss Recycling Centre beside the ring road (take the exit for Lockerbie & it’ll be on your right in half a mile).  Supermarkets also do bottles and cans.

Wood-burning stoves
Both Shepherds and Hay Loft have wood-burning stoves, for which firewood provided.  Please note that the stoves become very hot when in use and young children should be supervised.  Nothing flammable should be left near the stoves.
