GREEN CREDENTIALS

We have done much to reduce our impact on the environment and this has been recognised with a GOLD AWARD from The Green Tourist Business Scheme (GTBS).

Our buildings have been insulated as much as is practicable, the heating and waste systems modernised.  Paper, glass, metal and plastics are all recycled.  The cottages have log stoves and solar panels and we are considering geothermal, wind and other renewable power sources.  The farm is run to maximise the amount of wildlife and species diversity on its pastures … see The Farm.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
We try to minimise our impact on the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling our purchases, minimising our waste and disposing of it as harmlessly as possible.  We have a green investment portfolio, use renewable fuels (wood and solar) energy efficient products, a green energy tariff and have plant thousands of trees to capture carbon and avoid noxiouse chemicals.  We also buy locally, adhere to the legislation and continually seek to improve our practice and reduce pollution.

HOME FROM HOME
The cottages are insulated, double glazed and heated with a Biomass boiler and solar panels.  The radiators all have thermostats and the heating can be tailored to your needs & turned off when it would otherwise be wasted.

Low energy bulbs and down reflectors are used extensively and the white goods have all been chosen for efficiency (fridge door seal is regularly checked).  The toilets either have low volume flush selectors or are fitted with a hippo to save water.

Scottish water is “soft” it is nice to drink, kind to kettles and needs much less soap for washing.  So use less powder.

Phosphate free detergents, Chlorine free cleaners and biodegradable products are all provided.  Use them sparingly and our septic will work well.  Bleaches can not be used as they kill the septic tank organisms.  The washing line in the garden or Shiela Maid in the Laundry dry things efficiently for free.

RECORD KEEPING
We monitor our wood, electricity and water usage with the aim of increasing efficiency.  Your help and suggestions are appreciated.

RECYCLING

Old bread and fruit can be fed to horses and hens.  Compostable waste should be fed to the worms in the green bin by the hedge infront of Stockmans. Please take glass bottles to recycling points in town, but metal & plastic waste can go in the wheelie bins together with non-recyclable stuff as it will be sorted at the depo.  Dog waste should be scooped and tossed into the hedgerows or bagged and binned.
