THE FARM

View from the South

Gubhill Farm used to control thousands of acres of hill grazing and parkland until WWI and the the Forestry Commission conspired to cover much of it with trees.  The Forest of Ae (pronounced "a" as in "play") was planted and Ae Village created to house foresters.

The valley remains as a pasture for cattle and sheep and the 60 acres we retain is being grazed sensitively to benefit the wildlife.

It is not farmed intensively.

Below are a few of the things we have done since 1993 ….

Young treesBird feeder under Oaks
1995 - Native broadleaf trees (3000) for birds, red squirrel and carbon offset.

Road-side HedgeExtended Hedge
2001 - Extended hedges for food, shelter & wildlife corridors.  Stone dykes around house and drive rebuilt (frogs, toads, slow worms and lizards use them).

Twin PondsExtended Hedge
2003 –Ponds excavated for amphibians, fish and birds.  Areas of species rich grassland and wetland fenced off in summer to benefit flower seeding and ground nestering birds. More trees and hedges planted and dykes repaired.
